This adaptation of Brian Friel’s 1964 play brought the Public and Private Gars to screen life, particularly through the performance of Donal McCann as Public, with support from some of the finest actors of the time. As Gar plans for emigration, his musings over small town Ballybeg life and his relationship with his taciturn father draws on Friel’s theatrical device of Gar Private, allowing the two to interact on the eve of his departure.
